Gynecomastia is a condition experienced by men, where instead of having a completely flat chest, breasts bulge to a level where they resemble small and pert female breasts. The enlargement of a male breast can be as a result of several medical conditions and appears either as an enlargement of the mammary gland or as increased levels of adipose fat around the breast.

Causes of Gynecomastia

At iMed Istanbul we have a professional duty of care to carry out several pre-operative tests to establish whether your gynecomastia is being caused as a result of hormonal imbalance or a more serious illness, such as cancer. It can simply be caused by a build-up of adipose fat, or it can even be genetic.

While it is important we confirm the reason for your gynecomastia, it is still sensible to seek independent medical advice from your doctor or medical practitioner in advance of booking your gynecomasty surgery.

Why choose gynecomastia, or male breast reduction surgery

Women are not the only ones who can be extremely self-conscious about the appearance and shape of their breasts. However, the reasons why men and women are conscious about the appearance of their breasts are coming from totally different directions.

In men, a flat and muscular chest is the socially acceptable norm. Men are surrounded by images of lean male bodies with flat chests and the obligatory ‘six-pack’. It is not just women who are under constant pressure to have perfect bodies.

For a man, any enlargement of the breast can be seen as effeminate, or having female qualities, and therefore becomes an immediate challenge to the levels of masculinity. It can be embarrassing when it appears that a man has small breasts, whether it is when wearing a T-shirt when visiting the local swimming pool, or the beach. We know that in many cases, you choose to avoid wearing certain clothing and avoid situations where your naked chest will be seen. This can extend even to avoiding more-intimate relationships.

Gynecomastia is one of the best options available to remove ‘male breasts’ once the reason for their appearance has been clinically established.

What does gynecomastia or male breast reduction surgery involve?

In most cases, gynecomastia involves liposuction to remove fatty, or adipose fat. In most cases where the enlargement of the breast is caused by a growth of the mammary gland, these will be surgically removed.

The surgery is usually performed under general anesthetic and takes two-to-three hours to perform. The procedure may involve an overnight stay in the hospital.

If you have traveled from afar and have opted for an all-inclusive package, you will be transferred from your hotel to the hospital. When your procedure has finished you will be driven back to your hotel as part of our all-inclusive service.

Post-operative care for gynecomasty, or male breast reduction surgery

Your surgeon will carry out a thorough examination the day after your operation to ensure that all is well. Follow-up checks will be made before you depart from Istanbul, and any non-dissolving stitches will be removed.

You are advised to not return to work for a few days after surgery, and only than depending on the nature of your work is ‘sedate’ and does not involve any physical activity.

Medical support (provided) should be worn for the first few weeks after the operation, to protect the site of the procedure. During this period, it is important to avoid any strenuous body movement involving your arms or upper torso, especially lifting. Brisk walking is recommended during this period to maintain your general health.

Light activities can be resumed after a couple of weeks, and life should return to normal within a month when all swelling and bruising have disappeared.
